Meet College of Science

Founded on December 6, 2017, the College of Science of Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) is a basic and research-oriented college with a focus on basic sciences and related applied sciences and technologies. The College consists of five academic departments including Department of Mathematics, Department of Physics, Department of Chemistry, Department of Earth and Space Sciences, Department of Statistics and Data Science, and five research institutes: National Center for Applied Mathematics Shenzhen, SUSTech International Center for Mathematics, Shenzhen Grubbs Institute, Shenzhen Institute for Quantum Science and Engineering, and Center for Advanced Light Sources Science.

College of Science aims at cultivating top-notch talents with "solid foundation, inter-disciplinary competence, creativity and practice awareness". With strength in basic disciplines, the College attaches great importance to students’ innovation spirit and practice capability. We boosted 14 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 4 fellows of overseas academies, 25 faculties have been awarded the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, and 11 were nominated for the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars. We have 186 tenure-track professors, many of whom have been in Shenzhen Talent Peacock Plan, and Pearl River Talent Program and serve on the editorial board of international journals or have positions in overseas institutes.

College of Science has 8 undergraduate programs, 4 postgraduate programs, 4 Ph.D. programs, and 4 post-doctoral research stations.

Based on the international platforms and the independent PI (Principal Investigator) system, experts at the College of Science have made great strides in their research, with an increasing number of papers being published on Science, Nature, and other renowned journals. The establishment of laboratories and the cooperation among the College, enterprises, and other research institutes have also thrived in the past few years.

With support from the Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province, Development and Reform Commission of Shenzhen Municipality and Southern University of Science and Technology, we have established a series of major research platforms, including National Center for Applied Mathematics Shenzhen (NaCAMS), Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Computational Science and New Material Design, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Quantum Science and Engineering, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Catalytic Chemistry, Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Small Molecule Drug Discovery and Synthesis, Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Deep Offshore Oil and Gas Exploration Technology, USTech-HUAWEI Joint Lab for Advanced Light Source, etc., creating favorable conditions for scientific breakthroughs.

By inheriting the spirit of exploration and innovation, the College of Science will continue to aim high and will contribute to the development of Guangdong - Hong Kong - Macau Greater Bay Area and the modernization of Shenzhen. Anchored in fundamental sciences, the College will vigorously expand its research scope to cutting-edge fields and strive for a world-class College of Science in the foreseeable future.
