Innovation is the gene of Shenzhen. Carrying forward the enterprising, pioneering, and persevering spirit of the special economic zone, the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) has created the “Miracle of the SUSTech” and contributed to the “SUSTech Plan” to the chapter of China’s higher education.

College of Science is the mainstay of SUSTech’s basic discipline education and basic research. Under the leadership of the University’s Party Committee, we keep in mind the utmost interests of the nation, and try to grasp the major development opportunities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Shenzhen Pilot Demonstration Area desperately. We also bravely undertake the mission of making the country through science and technology, and strive to strengthen the foundation. Since its founding, under the leadership of the founding dean, Academician Xueming YANG, the College of Science has made remarkable achievements in talent echelon building and training, scientific research platform construction, academic achievement breakthrough, and discipline layout optimization. In particular, the mathematics program has been included in the “Double First-Class” construction discipline list by the national government in 2022, becoming the first “Double First-Class” program among Shenzhen local universities. Our core competitiveness has been significantly improved, laying a solid foundation for the college to become a world-class College of Science!

Brilliant chapters are always written in the process of forging ahead.

Basic research plays an increasingly important role in economic and social development, and in promoting the Chinese path to modernization. College of Science gathers talents from around the world and then cultivates its own with innovative vitality and the courage to explore “unmanned areas”. We also encourage teachers and students to carry out forward-looking research “from 0 to 1” and constantly improve the supporting conditions for scientific research, so that the talents can sit firmly on the “cold bench”. Original and subversive achievements continue to gush out. There is no doubt that this is the mission and responsibility of the College of Science, which adheres to the spirit of exploration and innovation.

College of Science has always ensured that education performs its fundamental mission of fostering virtue, gathering a high-quality teaching team with noble professional ethics, outstanding teaching and research abilities, and full of vitality. By adopting an “international and diversified” talent cultivation model, we continuously optimize the basic discipline education system, promote curriculum reform and innovation, and consolidate the foundation of mathematics and physics. Following the law of talent growth, we have created the “Basic Science Climbing Class”, focusing on cultivating students’ research, creative, and practical abilities, and striving to cultivate high-level composite basic research reserve talents, and continuously supporting the high-quality and connotative development of the College of Science.

Technology empowers development, and innovation leads the future. In the context of the deepening development of a new round of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation, the College of Science will always adhere to the “Four-pronged Comprehensive Strategy”, and thoroughly implement the “3-3-5” development strategy of SUSTech. We will gather the strength to carry out organized scientific research and strive to assemble big scientific research teams, construct large-scale scientific facilities, and build large science platforms, constantly improving aboriginal innovation ability. We are also committed to breaking down the barriers of disciplines, promoting the interdisciplinary integration of disciplines, deepening international exchanges and cooperation, and striving to make new breakthroughs in the field of cross-cutting science and technology. Industry-University-Research collaborative innovation is deepened, and the synergy of scientific and technological innovation is condensed, to release the synergy effect. Bearing the original aspiration and founding mission in mind at all times, the goal of “building a world-class College of Science” always encourages us to forge ahead boldly.
