SUSTech student receives SEG Scholarship
2023-09-01
The Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) recently announced the recipients of its 2023-2024 scholarships.
Ying HU, a Ph.D. student from the Department of Earth and Space Sciences (ESS) at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), has been honored with the SEG/Norman and Shirley Domenico Scholarship.
This marks Ying HU’s second consecutive year receiving a SEG Scholarship; she was previously awarded the SEG Foundation/Chevron Scholarship in 2022. Her consistent recognition underscores the exceptional quality of students from the Department of ESS, showcasing their dedication to excellence and ongoing commitment to innovative scientific research.
Ying HU is currently pursuing her Ph.D. at the University. Under the guidance of her supervisor, Assistant Professor Dikun YANG, she is primarily focused on three-dimensional (3D) forward modeling and inversion of frequency domain controlled-source electromagnetic data with the presence of steel casings within oil and gas reservoirs.
She has actively participated in several projects involving fracturing and reservoir electromagnetic monitoring. Notably, she played a pivotal role in developing the first-ever 3D real-time imaging system for fracturing electromagnetic monitoring, both domestically and internationally.
As the lead author, Ying HU has contributed to the publication of one paper indexed in SCI and two indexed in EI. Additionally, she has taken part in three domestic conferences and two international conferences, where she presented her findings and was honored with the Best Student Paper Award at both the 15th and 16th China International Geo-Electromagnetic Workshop in 2021 and 2023, respectively.
Established in 2007, the SEG/Norman and Shirley Domenico Scholarship aims to recognize academic excellence among students worldwide who are studying geophysics or related fields. This prestigious scholarship not only provides financial support but also serves as an avenue for exceptionally talented students to advance their studies and realize their aspirations.
