On the afternoon of October 21, 2019, the CPC Party Committee of College of Science held a report meeting on the interpretation of the College development plan with the theme of “finding out the gap by benchmarking, and making plans to promote development” based on the requirements of the theme education of “remaining true to the original aspiration and keeping in mind the mission” as well as the real conditions of the College. Yang Xueming, Dean of College of Science and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, He Jiaqing, Secretary of the CPC Party Committee and Deputy Dean of College of Science, as well as the director of the Department of Physics, Zhang Xumu, Deputy Dean of College of Science, and directors of other relevant departments, attended the discussion. Lan Hai, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Party Committee of College of Science, chaired the discussion.

Yang Xueming delivered a theme report on “remaining true to the original aspiration, shouldering the responsibilities and forging ahead to develop”. He introduced the overall development plan of College of Science from aspects including the organizational structure, research and teaching, talent introduction, as well as platform and party building. He said that College of Science had made remarkable research progress in recent years, with 4 disciplines listed as key disciplines for development of high-level universities in Guangdong Province and 3 projects approved as key projects of the National Nature Science Foundation of China in 2019. At present, College of Science is developing with more and more faculty members, improved training systems, various academic activities such as the Scientific Lecture Hall, and improved work in talent introduction, platform building and party building. He pointed out that College of Science should further develop its leading disciplines, improve the teaching and research work, promote the intersection of disciplines, and become more international. It should work in the introduction and training of talents, teaching and research, as well as disciplines and platform building with the goal of “building a world-class research-oriented university in China”, stick to the original aspiration and mission, and build College of Science into a world-class one.

He Jiaqing summarized the work in teaching of College of Science from aspects including the number of students, the undergraduate courses, the further education or employment of students, the training of excellent students and teachers, and the promotion of teaching reform with the theme of “finding the problems and solutions to be implemented”. He said that College of Science has been promoting a series of work to improve the teaching management, including the setting of the Teaching Guiding Committee, the preparation for the setting of the Science Experimental Class, as well as various evaluation and research work. He pointed out that the Teaching Guiding Committee of College of Science should make more efforts to rectify the existing problems in the work, improve the teaching management and quality assurance system, and improve the training model of postgraduates.

Zhang Xumu made a theme report from 3 aspects including the current situation of research development, the problem analysis of research work, and the discussion of research strategies with the theme of “remaining true to the original aspiration and shouldering the responsibilities to develop the research to a new level”. He analyzed the high-level research achievements of SUSTech in recent days and the application and winning of awards over the years, and put forward higher requirements and expectations for the research improvement of College of Science in the future. He said that the College had set up the Research Committee of College of Science, which is a full-time committee for research, and it will make the research management of the College more systematic and standardized. The faculty and students of College of Science will pool strengths and make more contributions to establish SUSTech as a world-class research-oriented university.
