College of Science held the Commencement Ceremony for Class of 2020

The Graduation Ceremony for Class of 2020, College of Science has been held on July 5th, Conference Hall at Research Building 1, which brought together 432 undergraduate and graduate students, and 64 faculty members, including academician Fuquan FANG, vice president of Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), academician Xueming YANG, dean of College of Science, academician Dapeng YU, director of Shenzhen Institute for Quantum Science and Engineering, academician Xiaofei CHEN, director of Department of Earth and Space Sciences, professor Jiaqing HE, associate dean and director of Department of Physics, professor Xumu ZHANG, associate dean of College of Science, and directors of each department and institute at College of Science. They were all here to recognize the efforts of the 432 undergraduate and graduate students and their tutors.
Considering the limited number of people in indoor space under epidemic prevention and control requirement, the ceremony was held via both online and offline channels, with conference hall of Research Building 1 as the main hall, and the 12 classrooms in Lecture Hall 1 as the sub-venues. The live streaming of the ceremony online had over twenty thousand audiences.

The ceremony started with a video clip themed with “An Adventurous Journey in College of Science Bay”. The volume of pictures and words spoken from the hearts reminded all the faculty and students the days and nights they spent at College of Science. The video ended with the wishes from academician Xueming YANG, dean of College of Science, and professors from Department of Mathematics, Department of Physics, Department of Chemistry, Department of Biology, Department of Earth and Space Sciences and Department of Statistics and Data science, which showed their expectations for all the graduates to stand higher, aim higher and achieve more.
Due to the Covid-19 coronavirus, this year' s graduation ceremony is particularly hard-won. To pay a tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for saving the infected people and to commemorate all the countrymen who lost their lives in the epidemic, a one-minute silent tribute has been arranged in the very start of the ceremony.

On behalf of all the faculty of Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), academician Fuquan FANG, president of SUSTech, extended the congratulation to all the graduates in College of Science. He noted that rooted in Shenzhen city, Guangdong Province in southern China, the frontier of China' s reform and opening-up, SUSTech has inherited the spirit of innovation and ground-breaking since its establishment, and the graduates have also been able to blaze their own trails. At the moment of their embarking on the next journey, he hoped that all the graduates could follow the messages of President Xi Jingping at this year' s Youth Day, try to explore their own development path and fulfill their life by studying and working hard. He expected that all the graduates could be self-disciplined and obey the rules in different circles, try to involve themselves in the whole society and make contributions to our motherland’s modernization drive with their own expertise and skills.

President FANG noted that this year marks the 10th anniversary of SUSTech, and each of the graduates has witnessed and participated its past decade’s growth. He wished that no matter where they are, class of 2020 could continue their supports for SUSTech and bring back the suggests and opinions from all walks of life.
Academician Xueming YANG, dean of College of Science extended his gratitude to all the graduates, for their participation in and companion with the College’s growth. He noted that during the past few years, by consolidating the basis and focusing on researches and talent cultivation, College of Science has made great strides, which could be mirrored in the number of breakthroughs published on the top-notch journals like Nature and Science. It should be noted that in 2019, the FC value of College of Science has tripled that of 2017, and the discovery of 3D Quantum Hall effect by associate professor Liyuan ZHANG, Department of Physics has been recognized by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) as one of the 2019 China’s top ten advances in science and technology. All of these achievements have the participation of our graduates.

Academician Xueming YANG had three expectations for the graduates—to keep in line with the time and be ready to blaze new trails, be down-to-earth to improve themselves and to make contributions to the great rejuvenation of Chinese nation.
Prof. Ruijun TIAN, representative of faculties of College of Science, shared his story since he came to SUSTech by centering around three keywords: ground-breaking, responsibility and interest. He encouraged the graduates to follow their hearts, be conscious of the changes and keep the enthusiasm and ambitions in the future. His message for class of 2020: Never stop, always be ready for your next journey won the applause of all the audiences.

Linying SHANG (‘20, undergraduate of Department of Chemistry) and Ke XU(‘20, graduate of Department of Earth and Space Sciences) spoke on behalf of their fellow graduating classmates. They shared the experience over the past few years and the feelings upon graduation, both of them have been listed as one of the 2020 Top Ten Excellent Graduates of SUSTech. With harvests, confidence, dream and hope, they are ready to further their journeys forward.

Associate dean Jiaqing HE read the resolution of the degree evaluation committee, 432 undergraduate and graduate students were awarded their degrees.
