Meet College of Science
Founded on December 6, 2017, the College of Science of Southern University of Science and Technology is a basic and research-oriented college with a focus on basic sciences and related applied sciences and technologies. The College consists of five academic departments including Department of Mathematics, Department of Physics, Department of Chemistry, Department of Earth and Space Sciences, Department of Statistics and Data Science and three research institutes: Shenzhen Institute for Quantum Science and Engineering, Shenzhen Grubbs Institute, SUSTech International Center for Mathematics.
The College of Science aims at cultivating top-notch talents with "solid foundation, inter-disciplinary competence, creativity and practice awareness" to facilitate social and economic development of China, particularly the Greater Bay Area and Shenzhen. With strength in basic disciplines, the College attaches great importance to the cultivation of innovation spirit and practice capability.
College of Science has a top-notch faculty with international study or work experience. Among our 151 tenure/tenure-track professors, we have 5 Academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, an Academician of Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, 9 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars.
The College vigorously promotes scientific research, strives to create a strong academic atmosphere and gives full play to the advantages of independent PI (Principle Investigator) system and team alliance. Remarkable progress has been made in high-level academic research, projects, platforms, industrial-academic-research cooperation and other aspects. The high-level research of our College paves the way for SUSTech in progressing among university rankings both domestically and internationally, rising from No.147 to No.99 in Nature Index annual ranking for universities 2019, and ranked No.9 in Times Higher Education World University Ranking 2020.
Looking ahead, centering around“teaching and research”, College of Science will continue to foster its own development. Anchored in fundamental sciences, the College will vigorously expand its research scope to cutting-edge fields and strive for a world-class college of science in the foreseeable future.
