Shenzhen Institute for Quantum Science and Engineering
The theoretical limit of the ability of quantum computing technology to store and process information is proportional to the number of bits 2^n. Therefore, it has super-parallel computing capabilities where traditional computers do not have. It has a huge application prospect in intelligent processing, cloud computing, biological structure analysis and material genetic design, especially in the fields of national defense and military, of complex large-scale data. Thus, it is an important development direction of High Performance Computing (HPC) technology and attracted great attention from developed countries: United Kingdom published a blueprint for the development of quantum technology as early as in 2014; Europe has launched a billion-euro flagship program for quantum computing; the US State Department has also published a national development strategy for quantum information and quantum computing; China has listed quantum information as a national priority development strategy, and quantum communication Quantum computing is listed in the top three of the 100 major technology and engineering projects in the "13th Five-Year Plan".
Responding to the country's "innovation-driven" national strategy, Shenzhen began to implement a "new round of innovation and development strategic layout and accelerate the development of international science and technology and industrial innovation centers." Meanwhile, it launched "Top Ten Action Plans" for science and technology innovation in early 2017. The action plan revolves around the priority development strategic positioning of the country's "quantum technology", and lists quantum science as one of the ten directions for key development. As one of the first three “Top Ten Basic Research Institutions” to be built, the groundbreaking ceremony of Shenzhen Institute of Quantum Science and Engineering (hereinafter referred to as “Institute of Quantum Science and Engineering”) kicked off in January 2018.
Shenzhen Institute of Quantum Science and Engineering is established and operated by SUSTech. It will explore cutting-edge fundamental scientific issues in the field of quantum information and serve the major needs of Shenzhen in technology and industrialization in the fields of quantum communication, high-performance computing technology and precision measurement and quantum materials. The Institute strives to address a large number of key scientific and engineering problems in the field of quantum information, train a group of elites in science with international influence, and build a basic research institution with significant international influences.
The overall goals of Shenzhen Institute of Quantum Science and Engineering are:
Dare to aim high and take courageous roles: Lay out the Chinese version of the "Science and Technology Revitalization Plan" according to the national policy of quantum information national priority development strategy, and achieve a number of "Nobel Prize-level" major scientific achievements in the research of future functional materials to lead the future scientific discoveries, disruptive technological breakthroughs and industrial development;
Foster connection between China and the world: As an economic, financial and innovation center in South China, one of the four major network centers in China in the future, and an important hub city in the Pearl River Delta urban agglomeration, Shenzhen needs to participate in the "Beijing-Shanghai-Shenzhen" North-South main line, establish the Greater Bay Area Local Area Network, and form a quantum network that radiates Southeast Asia;
Manufacture a powerful quantum computer and provide a powerful impetus for the 4th Industrial Revolution: carry out quantum simulation and artificial intelligence; provide "quantum cloud computing" platform services; develop a dedicated quantum computer that is powerful and can perform specific tasks.
