On May 21, 2021, the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) and BGP Inc., China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), held the opening ceremony of the BGP-SUSTech Research Center of Geophysical Exploration Frontier Technology (RCGFT), which both parties jointly established.

The event was held at the SUSTech Convention Center. Shifan ZHAN, Chief Technical Expert of BGP, and Xiaofei CHEN, Head of the Department of Earth and Space Sciences (ESS), attended the unveiling ceremony.

Xiaofei CHEN gave a brief introduction on the formation of the RCGFT of BGP-SUSTech. He also spoke about the faculty of ESS, its scientific research platforms, and development plans. He hopes that this new research center will make significant contributions in the field of resource surveying.

Yi GONG, Deputy Director of the Office of Research at SUSTech, spoke about SUSTech’s contributions to society and its scientific research. He expects the RCGFT of BGP-SUSTech to yield major results and contribute to the development of China’s petroleum industry.

Shifan ZHAN said that BGP would strengthen its cooperation and relationship with SUSTech through this new research center. It will promote in-depth integration between university and enterprise, academic research, and the development of innovative geophysical technologies.

Shifan ZHAN and Xiaofei CHEN jointly unveiled the RCGFT of BGP-SUSTech in the presence of attending guests.

After the unveiling ceremony, the two parties held discussions on the development of GEOEAST software research, high-resolution geological imaging, borehole seismic technology, and electromagnetic detection.

In the future, the research center will conduct cooperative research on critical problems in deep water, large depth, high resolution, and intelligence in the geophysical exploration and development of oil and gas resources. They will also work on talent cultivation, data sharing, research, and new methods and products.
