SUSTech' s College of Science hosts educational psychology lecture for postgraduate tutors

2024-04-02

Educational psychology delves into how individuals learn and develop within academic contexts, utilizing psychological principles, theories, and methods. In universities, it forms a foundation for nurturing productive educator-student relationships.

By grasping students’ psychological needs, educators can tailor teaching methods and support strategies, fostering a conducive learning environment. This knowledge aids effective communication, student motivation, and personalized assistance, enhancing engagement, academic performance, and well-being. Applied educational psychology offers educators insights and tools for fostering positive tutor-student dynamics, and guiding students towards academic success and fulfillment.

In recognition of this, the College of Science at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) recently hosted an event featuring Yan KONG, Professor from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and Executive Director of the Department of Psychology, who shared her expertise on educational psychology with graduate tutors.

Delving into practical scenarios, Prof. KONG explained the psychological needs of students, emphasizing the importance of warmth, respect, and guidance. She underscored that effective communication between educators and students is paramount for fulfilling the tutor’s duty of fostering moral character.

Inspiring a constructive approach rooted in empathy and understanding toward students in need, she equipped the tutors with practical strategies. Urging them to act as wise guides, she emphasized the importance of keen observation, attentive listening, and thoughtful discretion in their interactions.

Concluding the lecture, Shu-Hong YU, Dean of the College of Science and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, presented Prof. Yan KONG with a commemorative certificate.

In his closing remarks, Academician YU reaffirmed the College of Science’s dedication to prioritizing the mental well-being of graduate students. He stressed the importance of collaboration among tutors, various departments, and colleges to safeguard students’ physical and mental health. Such efforts, he noted, are pivotal in nurturing top-noted innovative talents and advancing SUSTech’s status as a “Double First-Class” university.
