On August 31, 2019, the experience exchange and sharing session of outstanding graduate representatives organized by College of Science was held in Room 102, Lychee Hills Block 1.

In this exchange and sharing session of learning experience, three seniors, namely Zhan Pengzhi from the Department of Chemistry, Liu Luyi from the Department of Mathematics and Xu Xiao from the Department of Physics, shared their learning experience in their respective fields. 

Zhan Pengzhi

Graduate student of Grade 2018, Department of Chemistry

Zhan Pengzhi from the Department of Chemistry was the first person to share his experience. With regard to laboratory safety, he introduced the operating procedures of laboratory equipment, precautions for hazardous chemicals, and personal safety protection. He also stressed that students should strike a proper balance between work and rest and avoid doing experiments in fatigue.

The cultivation of research habits is very important for graduate students. He urged new students to keep laboratory safety in mind, because safety is the foundation of experiments. At ordinary times, they should attach importance to the research, classification and arrangement of research literature, improve the accuracy of the experiment records, regularly share the experimental progress and ideas with their mentors, and take regular clean-up of the experimental bench seriously. He also added that “research is a high-intensity work, students should learn to release pressure and do exercise on a regular basis".

Grade 1 is a transition period, during which time students should attach importance to selecting and learning core courses of their direction, learn to quickly and effectively search for literature, get familiar with laboratory safety procedures, bear in mind precautions for the use of hazardous chemicals, master the basic experimental operations and learn to use the research instruments.

"The journey of research for everyone will not be all roses, and perseverance is the key." We are grateful for the encouragement from Zhan Pengzhi.

Liu Luyi

Next, Liu Luyi, an outstanding graduate student from the Department of Mathematics, brought about his sharing from the perspective of mathematics learning.

In terms of learning, he emphasized the importance of basic course learning and English learning. English learning should focus on three aspects: lessons, reference books and literature. Basic course learning is very important for laying a professional foundation, winning scholarships and applying for foreign exchange studies. He also suggested that students should make good use of the office hour to initiate or participate in the discussion classes, given that peer assistance also has a significant effect on improving learning. Teaching assistance is a "compulsory course". Lu Yi exhorted students to improve their own competitiveness and actively apply for the position of teaching assistant. 

In terms of life, he hoped that the students could "avoid staying up late, avoid staying up late, avoid staying up late", with important words repeated for three times.

Xu Xiao

Lastly, Xu Xiao from the Department of Physics brought his wonderful sharing.     

He believes that it is very important for graduate students to build inner order. Students should recognize their role as a graduate student and set a bottom line for themselves in the pursuit of truth or profit. In the path of research, learning to communicate is also essential. We should learn to communicate with data, with instruments, and with people. Regular quantitative exercise, moderate games, diversified book reading, art works and group building are all channels of communication for us. As students of science and engineering, we should also attach importance to developing our own humanistic literacy. He also advocated that students should embrace self-discipline, recognize the essence of self-discipline, and follow the connotation of self-discipline.

"Success comes naturally in the pursuit of excellence." Xu Xiao concluded his speech with this word, encouraging both students and himself.
