New progress on seismic leaky mode observation

2022-03-15

Dispersion means that waves have different propagation velocities at different frequencies. Dispersion curve inversion is an important technique in seismology to detect the inner structure of the earth. The traditional dispersion curve usually refers to the normal mode dispersion curve extracted from Rayleigh or Love surface waves. In addition to the normal modes occupying the main energy in the seismic wave, the leaky (leaking) mode of weak energy also exhibits dispersion.

SUSTech' s Physics discipline ranks among ESI’s global top 1%

2022-03-12

Recently, Clarivate Analytics released its latest Essential Science Indicators (ESI) ranking data. The Physics discipline of the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) entered the top 1% of ESI in the world for the first time, making it the University’s sixth discipline on the list, following Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, Clinical Medicine, and Environment/Ecology.

Proposing new percolation model with an indirect influence mechanism – the induced percolation

2022-03-09

Associate Professor Yanqing Hu’s research group from the Department of Statistics and Data Science at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) recently published a research article that proposes a new percolation model with an indirect influence mechanism. Through the statistical analysis of empirical data on collaboration behaviors of scientists, it is found that indirect collaborators have a more important influence on the changes of their research fields. And based on this empirical phenomenon, an induced percolation model for behavioral propagation is proposed.

Fundamental position of complex numbers in quantum mechanics

2022-03-07

Recently, Professor Jingyun Fan’s research group from the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), in collaboration with scholars from Austria, Spain, Switzerland, and the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), have made important progress in the study of the fundamental position of complex numbers, one of the fundamental problems of Quantum mechanics.

Viscoelasticity – A ‘hidden’ degree of freedom for governing Mott criticality

2022-03-05

A research team led by Assistant Professor Shanmin Wang from the Department of Physics & Academy for Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) has recently reported their latest progress on the study of Mott transition in PbCrO3 by measuring the lattice parameter at pressure. This led to the discovery of a Mott transition mechanism, a long-standing issue that has eluded physicists for more than half a century.

Researchers make breakthrough progress in atom-light non-Hermitian interface

2022-03-02

Associate Professor Jiefei Chen’s research group of the Shenzhen Institute for Quantum Science and Engineering (SIQSE) at SUSTech has made a breakthrough in exploring a new type of non-Hermitian atom-photon interface at the single-quantum level. Their work, entitled “Quantum Interference between Photons and Single Quanta of Stored Atomic Coherence,” was published in Physical Review Letters, a top international journal in physics.
